Short answer: Komani Lake is remote and there is no simple public bus. The realistic route is a ferry-company minibus from Tirana (leaves around 05:30, about €12) or from Shkodra (around 06:30, about €8) that is timed to connect with the 09:00 ferry at Koman. The ferry to Fierzë takes about 2.5 hours through spectacular canyon scenery. Driving is possible but genuinely not recommended — much of the road is unpaved, and you have to park and walk through an unlit tunnel to reach the dock. For most day-trippers, a guided tour or the ferry-company package is the only sane option.
Why this one is different
Berat and Ksamil are easy. Komani is not. It is one of the most beautiful places in Albania — the ferry ride through the flooded Drin canyon is regularly called one of the most scenic in the world — but it sits deep in the mountains with no straightforward transport. Getting there is the whole challenge, and it is worth understanding before you set off.
The key fact: the buses and the ferry are operated by the same companies, and the timings are built to connect. You are not assembling this from independent public transport. You are booking onto a system.
The realistic route by minibus + ferry
The ferry companies (Berisha is the best known) run minibuses timed to their morning ferry:
- From Tirana: minibus departs around 05:30, roughly €12, about a 3–3.5 hour drive to Koman.
- From Shkodra: minibus departs around 06:30, roughly €8, about a 2 hour drive. Shkodra is the more common launch point and is itself under 2 hours from Tirana.
- The ferry leaves Koman at around 09:00 and reaches Fierzë about 11:30 — roughly 2.5 hours through the canyon.
Book these through the ferry company’s website or your hotel. Book the return leg too. Forgetting to book the bus back is one of the most common mistakes people make on this route, and there is no casual onward transport to fall back on.
The day-trip loop
If you just want to see the lake and don’t plan to continue into the Alps, do a return crossing:
- Ferry Koman → Fierzë, departing ~09:00, arriving ~11:30
- A short break in Fierzë — there is little there beyond a shop or two to grab food
- Ferry Fierzë → Koman, departing ~13:00, back at Koman ~15:30
- Road transfer back to Tirana, arriving early evening
It is a long day, but it delivers the scenery that is the whole point.
The Shala River
The turquoise Shala River — often called Albania’s Thailand — branches off Komani Lake and is only reachable by boat from the lake. There is no road. Day tours to the Shala River take a smaller boat off the main ferry route to a stretch of clear water where you can swim and have lunch. If the Shala River is what you have seen in photos, note that it is a separate boat trip on top of the ferry, not the ferry itself.
Driving: possible, but don’t
You can drive to Komani, but nearly every experienced source advises against it, especially in a rental car:
- Much of the road is unpaved, narrow and winding.
- You have to park about 1 km from the lake and walk through a dark, unlit tunnel with no footpath to reach the dock.

You can put a car on the ferry (priced by the square metre, booked in advance), but for a day trip it is far more trouble than it is worth.
The multi-day option
Many travellers use the ferry as the first leg of the classic Alps route: Koman → Fierzë by ferry, then minibus to Valbona, hike Valbona → Theth, then back to Shkodra or Tirana. The easiest way: a guided day trip
Honestly, this is the route where a tour makes the most sense of any in Albania. Matching road transfers to ferry departures in remote mountain villages, in a language you don’t speak, with no fallback if you miss a connection, is real stress. A guided day trip removes all of it — transport from Tirana, the ferry, the boat onto the Shala River, and a lunch stop, handled as one booking.
