Planning to hike the Albanian Alps and torn between Theth and Valbona? Both valleys are spectacular, and the famous trail actually connects them — but if you only have time for one base, here’s how to choose.
The quick answer
Choose Theth for dramatic waterfalls, the iconic stone church, and easier access from Tirana. Choose Valbona for wide-open glacial valley views and a more remote, peaceful feel. Better yet, do the legendary Theth–Valbona hike and experience both.
Getting there
Theth is reachable by road from Tirana in around 3.5–4 hours. Valbona is typically reached via the stunning Komani Lake ferry followed by a road transfer, making the journey itself a highlight. Many travellers combine the region with a Komani Lake and Shala River tour.
The Theth to Valbona hike
This is one of the most famous day hikes in the Balkans: roughly 6–8 hours over the Valbona Pass, with breathtaking mountain scenery the whole way. It’s moderately challenging but achievable for anyone with reasonable fitness. Most hikers stay overnight in guesthouses at each end.
When to go
The hiking season runs roughly June to early October. Outside these months the pass can be snowbound and guesthouses close. July and August are busiest and warmest; June and September offer fewer crowds and pleasant temperatures.
What to bring
- Sturdy hiking boots and layers (mountain weather changes fast)
- Plenty of water and snacks
- Sun protection and a light rain jacket
- Cash — card payment is rare in the mountains
